Health Economics
Connecting expertise in economic evaluation to strengthen research translation and healthcare decisions across Western Australia.
About
The Health Economics Community of Practice connects expertise across WAHTN’s partnership. Cost-effectiveness is a necessary consideration across all research. Health economics provides a framework for measuring and evaluating the cost and value of any health intervention or program, both for the individual and for society in general. These considerations are particularly important when seeking government subsidies for listing new technologies and pharmaceuticals. Health economics is therefore an essential element in translating favourable clinical data into routine practice and improved patient outcomes.
The role of health economics has become increasingly important because of pressure on health resources, the need to demonstrate the economic implications of research translation, the increasing array of technological interventions and an empowered consumer. Economic tools provide the means to address resource allocation consistently and explicitly, supporting fair and transparent distribution.
Background
The original WAHTN health economics work responded to limited specialist capacity in WA and the growing importance of evaluating value in healthcare. It supported collaboration across institutions to strengthen capability and research translation.
Our focus
- Strengthening collaboration across institutions to make better use of health economics expertise.
- Building research capability and awareness of economic evaluation.
- Supporting consideration of costs, outcomes and value in research translation.
Activities and opportunities
WAHTN has supported cross-institution collaboration and initiatives that raise awareness of health economics. Economic evaluation helps researchers and health services make the implications of new technologies, treatments and models of care explicit.
The Community of Practice is active and accepts enquiries. Contact the community to discuss participation and current activities.
