While 6000 families are being followed at a distance via linked data, 4000 ORIGINS families are attending regular clinic visits for health assessments and collection of biological samples. Our biobank collections include blood, saliva, buccal cells, urine, stool, hair, house dust, cord blood, placentas, meconium, breastmilk, and colostrum over eight timepoints spanning the antenatal period and early childhood. Access to sample is subject scientific and ethical approval and access fees apply. Emerge Australia AusME Registry & BiobankProfessor Simon Laws and Michelle Tavoletti08 6304 5128The AusME Biobank is a national research platform established by Emerge Australia to support biomedical research into myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), long COVID and related post-infective, energy-limiting conditions. The biobank collects, processes and stores blood-derived biospecimens, including plasma, serum and peripheral blood mononuclear cells, from people with ME/CFS, people with long COVID and healthy control participants. The AusME Biobank is linked to the AusME Registry, enabling biospecimens to be associated with longitudinal clinical, demographic and patient-reported outcome data. This linkage supports well-characterised participant cohorts and enables researchers to investigate biological mechanisms, disease heterogeneity, biomarkers, disease severity, symptom profiles and potential therapeutic targets. The AusME Biobank operates as a national collaborative resource, with collection and processing supported through approved biobank nodes and partner sites across Australia. Access to biospecimens and linked de-identified data is governed by Emerge Australia’s access and governance processes, including review by the AusME Access Committee, to ensure that use of the resource is scientifically justified, ethically appropriate and aligned with the priorities of people living with ME/CFS and long COVID.s.laws@ecu.edu.au (WA Node Lead), michelle.tavoletti@emerge.org.auLongitudinal, Disease Specific10,001 - 100,000Blood, Plasma, Serum, Other, PBMC'sDemographic Data, Medical Records, Other, Validated survey tools, Routine pathologyEdith Cowan University, Centre for Precision Healthhttps://emerge.org.au/ausme/Poly: A biobank that generally has a larger accrual scope, resources and multiple users outside the biobank proper.2019 - ongoing

Health in Men StudyLeon Flicker08 9224 0377The Health In Men Study (HIMS) arose out of a population-based randomized trial of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms conducted in Perth in 1996-99. All men were identified from an electronic copy of the electoral roll, the target age range was 65-79 years. In total, 12,203 men attended for baseline screening and of these 4,249 returned for a resurvey and provided a blood sample in 2001-4. Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, glucose, creatinine, C-reactive protein and homocysteine were all measured.leon.flicker@uwa.edu.auCohort, Longitudinal, Population Based1,001 - 10,000Plasma, Serum, DNADemographic Data, Patient Questionnaires, Medical Records, Physiological / Biochemical MeasurementsUniversity of Western AustraliaPoly: A biobank that generally has a larger accrual scope, resources and multiple users outside the biobank proper.2001 - 2017

A follow-up of the WA Kidskin StudyProfessor David Mackey08 9381 0841We are assessing myopia rates in approximately 900 of 1776 original young adult participants who were part of the Western Australian Kidskin Study while they were in primary school in the 1990s. The Kidskin Study intervention resulted in a reduction in time spent outdoors and an increase in the use of sun protection while outdoors. We wish to now investigate the possible impact that this intervention has had on the development of myopia in these participants who are now young adults.david.mackey@lei.org.auCohort101 - 1,000Blood, DNAPatient Questionnaires, Imaging Data, Physiological / Biochemical MeasurementsLions Eye InstituteMono: A biobank that supports a specific research project, may have few staff members, a small-scale accrual scope with little to no initial intention of releasing or distributing biospecimens to secondary parties.2015 - ongoing

TARRGET Glaucoma StudyProfessor David Mackey08 9381 0841The TARRGET pilot study selected 100 families in SA from advanced glaucoma index cases in the Australian & New Zealand Registry of Advanced Glaucoma (ANZRAG). The data showed that >50% of screened firstdegree relatives (FDRs) had signs suspicious of glaucoma or definite glaucoma, as well as detecting new suspect and definite glaucoma. The study has now expanded nationally to educate and screen FDRs. The Australian IPF Registry - blood substudyA/Prof Yuben Moodley08 6152 6568Little is known about the mechanisms of lung fibrosis. Earlier studies suggest that there may be blood or genetic markers, which may contribute to the development and progression of lung fibrosis. Our biobank stores blood samples (e.g. plasma and serum) from IPF patients at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months after enrolment to investigate the changes in these markers over time, and their relationship to lung fibrosis. Making the case for Centralised Biobanking in WA

Careful management of bio-specimens for current and future research is fundamental for high quality and reproducible research. There’s a need in WA to establish a harmonised sample collection, storage, curation and management system which will allow ethically acceptable standardisation across cohorts and registries. This will assist with avoiding duplication of effort and investment.

In addition to our work with the WA Department of Health, WAHTN also maintains the WA Biobank Registry. First established in 2020, the registry is a valuable resource that documents WA’s available biobanks. Users can quickly find relevant information such as sample types, data types, hosting institutions and contact details.

We will continue to update the registry to reflect current information and encourage any researchers with biobanks to contact us to be added to the registry.

Contact a biobank

This directory provides an overview of participating collections. Contact the relevant biobank to confirm current holdings, availability, access conditions and any required approvals. A registry listing does not mean samples or data are immediately available.
